Saving Private Ryan In critiquing Steven Spielberg's movie Saving Private Ryan, I realized that you can not base a move only on realism. A good movie has got to have some kind of character or formalism to carry the viewer through these realistic scenes. Spielberg not only uses these tools but also showed stereotyped images in his characters. In my critique I wish to point out some uses of realism, formalism, and stereotypes in the movie Saving Private Ryan. In my eyes Saving Private Ryan is a masterpiece. Even though the movie is nearly three hours in length, it is evenly distributed and takes on a powerful subject. Private Ryan wasn't merely another war movie, I really felt it caught the soul of war. The film begins with a half-hour sequence of the landings at Normandy on D-Day. Many films have portrayed this D-Day scene, but have failed to me in realism. In Private Ryan, realism portrayed in a nearly exact replica of war. To achieve this Steven Spielberg displayed the battle scenes, as the next step could be the moment of death. Limbs are blown off in mid-shot; guts splay out of uniforms and onto the sandy beach; soldier in mid-sentence are startled by bullet holes blossoming on their foreheads. Bloods sticks to the lens of the camera. In doing so Spielberg mastered the opening of Saving Private Ryan as far as realism. Roberts 2 The D-Day sequence actually has nothing to do with the story of Saving Private Ryan. Formalism kicks in when Miller and what's left of his small platoon receive orders to retrieve a private Ryan (Matt Damon) from somewhere on the forward line in France. Ryan's brothers have all died in combat in the last week, and General wants to pull the private back to the states, to spare Mrs. Ryan the heartbreak of having all of her boys killed in action. Never have I seen a documentary that made a box office hit solely on realism so I feel Spielberg's plot was well worth wild. Not only did I see realism and formalism in Saving Private Ryan but Spielberg's platoon of men consisted of the usual melting-pot collection of stereotypes. The loyal meat-and-potatoes sergeant, loudmouth Brooklyn-Irish critic, combat virgin, wisecracking Jew, big-hearted Italian, bible-quoting sharpshooter. Although, Tom Hanks goes against stereotype in this movie. Captains are usually portrayed as rock-hard and without emotion. In this movie, Tom Hanks shows a very caring and calm portrayal of a military captain. As a platoon movie, Saving Private Ryan is engrossing, with some sharply written conversation and brilliantly executed scenes of danger and violence. Although I feel this movie is reaching for a grander scale, as an attempt to make the war movie more realistic and less Hollywood-ized, Private Ryan is often shockingly effective. There are moments in this film where I thought, what was about to happen couldn't happen in a Hollywood movie, let alone a Steven Spielberg movie and then, unbelievably, it happens. All and all, I Roberts 3 loved every hour of Saving Private Ryan. Seeing this movie after a few Cinema Appreciation classes I seem to have caught things that would have other wise been looked over. Such as, realism, formalism, and stereotypes to which built a good foundation and created a good movie.

In southwest Asia - the Middle East, cereal crops went through a similar process 9,000 ya by the Natufians. Wheat is a plant common to this area, and two domesticated varieties emmer and einkorn have been dated to more than 10,000 years ago (456). The wild wheat had two problems that had to be dealt with. First, that rachis of a wheat plant (where the seeds attach to the plant) becomes brittle and breaks very easily when the seeds become ripe. In the wild, this allows the seeds to be easily carried off by winds or animals, allowing for the spread of the plant. Chief Seattle When stories are told about the American Indian it is usually the Indians that are looked upon as the heathens. They are portrayed as savages who spent most of their time raiding wagon trains and scalping the white settlers just for fun. The media has lead us to believe that the American government was forced to take the land from these savage Indians. We should put the blame where it belongs, on the U.S. Government who lied, cheated, and stole from the Indians forcing many Indian leaders to surrender not only their tribes but their nation in order to save the lives of their people. Among the Indians of the Pacific Northwest, perhaps the best known may be Chief Seattle. Chief Seattle (more correctly known as Seathl or Sealth) was born sometime between 1786-1790 on Blake Island at the campsite of his ancestors. Blake Island lies south and a little east of Bainbridge Island and west and a little south of Seattle. Seattle was the son of Suquamish leader named Schweabe and a Duwamish woman named Scholitza. He became Chief of the Suquamish, Duwamish, and allied Salish speaking tribes by proving his leadership qualities in a war that pitted his and other saltwater tribes against those of the Green and White Rivers. (1) He was considered to be Duwamish since his mother was the daughter of a Duwamish chief and the line of descent passed matrilineally. This was sometimes the case when fathers died while their son's were was still young and the mother would return to her tribe to raise the children. The definition of communication, in terms of leadership, is the ability for leaders to put out information that is clear and concise to which their subordinates and peers will be able to comprehend. Barrett defines leadership communication as the controlled, purposeful transfer of meaning by which individuals influence a single person, a group, an organization, or a community by using the full range of their communication abilities and resources to connect positively with their audiences, overcome interferences, and create and deliver messages that guide, direct, motivate, or inspire others to action (Barrett, 2011, p. 6). Also, to add to this, she also feels that school does not challenge her enough . With all of this put together, this would make a negative effect on school and this is why I think Scout dislikes school. 4) Who is Boo Radley? What is his function in this novel. Boo Radley is one of the main characters but doesnt make an appearance until the very end in this novel. At first, to Scout, he is just a scary figure that only comes out at nights and likes to eat cats. Scout, Jem and Dill fascinated by this scary monster all have games where they would see if Boo Radley would ever come out. Not knowing any better and being just kids, they see if they can touch the door, they try to put a letter asking for Boo Radley to come out and they even get shot at trying to get Boo Radley out of his house.
